Zeist 2021

Dearest delegates,

Welcome to Zeist 2021! As Head-Organisers, we are incredibly happy to welcome you to one of the most wonderful organisations to exist: the European Youth Parliament. We hope that you will make the best of friendships, learn a lot and get a sense of European citizenship. With our theme, Shifting lenses: Creating a mosaic of ideas we encourage you to be creative, get inspired by others and together come up with solutions to Europe’s most pressing issues.

This session will be a safe place for all of you to brainstorm, share ideas and connect: all of the people contributing to Zeist 2021 will help you to do so. The Regional Selection Conference is the place where you will first get to know the European Youth Parliament. Hopefully you have a lot of fun, get lots of insights and fall in love with EYP as much as we did. It truly will be a special experience for all of you.

As Head-Organisers, together with our organising team, we are there to make this session an incredible experience for you. Should you have any questions or worries, come to us! Read this webpage carefully, since it contains most information about the session before you get here!

Can’t wait to see you at Zissa 2021!

Dear Delegates of Zeist 2021,

As the President of the Session, it is my job to implement our theme: ‘Shifting lenses: Creating a mosaic of ideas’ into the Session’s academic output. For me, this theme is calling on all of us to not let ourselves be inhibited by notions of ‘this has always been done this way’ or ‘this is just how our society works’. In my opinion, only very few concepts in the world are of such fundamental nature that they do not deserve to be challenged and potentially changed. With the world rapidly evolving around us, constantly and carefully rethinking how we as the European Union organise life and do society is not a choice, but a necessity.

The Vice-Presidents and I tried to keep this in mind while developing the topics you will be discussing in Zeist. All of the topics are – explicitly or implicitly – asking you to reevaluate whether existing legislation is still aligned with our values as a European society, and, if not, how said legislation should be brought up to speed.

However, I urge you all: Do not just challenge yourselves in terms of academics, but also as people. Communication always works in both ways. Therefore, make an effort to not only express your own opinions to your fellow Delegates, but to truly engage with and appreciate their ideas and opinions as well. Understanding which experiences others are basing their arguments on is often much harder than making your own voice heard, but is all the more crucial for creating innovation. Among other things, Zeist 2021 will be about achieving a rich diversity of ideas, all of which will receive their rightful place in the mosaic the Session’s theme is asking us to create.

Four years of participating in the European Youth Parliament have taught me that there are a lot more things we all have in common than things that divide us, and that seemingly irreconcilable differences in opinions are more often than not based on a lack of clear communication, as opposed to actual disagreements. Your Chairpersons, all of them truly amazing individuals in their own right, will be there to support you on this journey, but they rely on your willingness to engage, to communicate, and to compromise.

As of 2021, the European Union and the world are facing unprecedented challenges, ranging from a global resurgence of populist and authoritarian regimes, the abuse of human beings as pawns in political chessgames and for financial gain, to man-made climate change. Solving these issues will undoubtedly rely on international cooperation. Furthermore, it is becoming increasingly clear that politics can do only so much without the support and, if required, pressure from civil society. That is where I see the European Youth Parliament and, more specifically, Zeist 2021. By participating in the Session, learning about the EU, and discussing political questions in English, you, dear Delegates, are actively preparing to become the future leaders that Europe relies upon.

With that all said, it is my greatest pleasure to welcome you all to the Regional Selection Conference of EYP The Netherlands, Zeist 2021. I cannot wait to hear your opinions!

See you soon!

Johann

Dear participants of Zeist 2021,

I’m so glad that you have chosen to participate in this amazing Regional Conference of EYP The Netherlands. Joining EYP can open up so many opportunities. I hope this session can be a place for you to explore your own place in EYP, and see what it can bring into your life.

During the session, I will be the Editor, which means I will be responsible for the media output of Zeist 2021. Together with my team of five Media Team Members, we will be doing our best to capture all elements of the session for you to remember it forever and share it with anyone you would like. You may see us at the session getting people involved in creative projects and taking pictures of everything going on. We want to encourage you to get creative during the session and not be afraid to seek your limits and see what happens. Surprise yourself.

At Zeist 2021, you will have the chance to discover new people and ideas so always stay open-minded and let yourself see things from a different perspective. There is a lot to learn within EYP, both about extremely interesting topics within Europe, but also about your own personal development and how you function within such a working environment. Most importantly, don’t forget to stay close to yourself and let yourself learn in your own way.

Good luck with all your preparations and I cannot wait to see you in December in Zeist.

See you soon!

Dear participant of Zeist 2021,

It is wonderful that you are a part of the Regional Selection Conference in Zeist. The session will be a place where you can discover EYP, be creative and meet new people that inspire you. If you walk into this session with an open mind and enthusiasm, I am sure you will have a memorable experience and will learn a lot! The session theme ‘Shifting lenses: Creating a mosaic of ideas’ perfectly captures what we hope you will do during the session: Learn from others and build on each other’s different ideas, instead of competing with your differences. Respect each other’s opinions and take them into account, and you will be amazed of what you will produce during Zeist 2021!

During the session, I will lead the Jury Team. This team listens to the debates in your committee and to the points you make during the General Assembly. Based on our observations, we will provide feedback and make a selection for the National Conference. As  mentioned, Zeist 2021 is a place for cooperation and not for competition! As a jury team, we believe that the most important thing during the session is that you learn and grow as a person, and that you have an amazingly good time. I firmly believe that if you go into Zeist 2021 with the same mindset, you will have a wonderful weekend.

I can not wait to meet you all in December, and good luck with the preparations!

All the best,

Hannah

What is the EYP?

The European Youth Parliament is a non-profit organisation that is active all over Europe. They organise events throughout the year, but the most common ones are Regional sessions, national sessions and international sessions. During these sessions, the three main goals are skill development, gaining knowledge and empowering young people.

What is an RSC?

A Regional Selection Conference is the first step into EYP. The main objective is to teach you, the delegates, about what EYP is and encourage you to enjoy European politics and debating, and since you have already registered to be a part of this event, you have already taken the first step. The RSC’s will also be a place where you will be judged on whether or not you are going to be selected for the National Conference in Rotterdam later this year,  but don’t worry about that too much.

What comes after the RSC?

After the Regional selection conference, you might be selected to go to the National Conference in February 2022. But, even if you are not selected, your EYP journey can still continue to thrive. You can participate in upcoming EYP events both in the Netherlands, as well as in other countries in Europe. You can do this as a delegate or you can become an ‘official’, to either be a journalist, an organiser, jury member or even chairperson. During the Regional Conference, you will learn more about what all these roles entail.

Teambuilding (TB)

During teambuilding you will get to know your chairperson and your fellow committee members. This is key for good teamwork, a nice work environment and you might end up with lifelong friendships! During all the eyp sessions there are multiple exercises that you do with your committee and with the entire group. This enables you to get to know your fellow delegates and form bonds with them by solving problems together. The group will be divided into eight different committees, each containing between six and eight delegates and one or two chairpersons. The chairpersons will guide and support the committees throughout the session and they will challenge the groups physically and intellectually with puzzles, games and dilemmas. This will make sure that everybody feels comfortable with each other and is able to express their opinion freely. The dress code for part of the session is casual.

Committee Work (CW)

During committee work, you will write a high-quality resolution presenting your group’s vision for solving the key issues of your topic. The resolution contains a collection of statements of what the problem is, solutions to the problems and how you would like to implement these solutions. Each committee revolves around a current European issue. Under the guidance of the chairperson, your committee will brainstorm about the different problems and possible solutions and discuss related matters. This part of the session is where you will need your previously done research the most and it is important to come prepared, in order for you to form a well grounded opinion and convince others by giving arguments. Of course, it is also very important to be open minded and listen to your peers’ opinions. Eventually, your committee should be able to present a resolution that is supported by every delegate. The dress code for this part of the session is casual.

General Assembly (GA)

During the session you work towards the general assembly, which takes place on sunday. Here you will debate about the resolutions that the committees have worked on. The time set aside for each topic will be around forty minutes, but the President and the Session Board can choose to prolong this or cut it short. The proposing committee introduces their resolution, defends this and leads the debate. At the end of the debates, a vote will take place to determine if the resolution will be accepted. Note that the vote doesn’t affect the jury selection! The dress code for this part of the session is Business formal.

To do before the session

Academic Preparation

It is important that you start the session well prepared and that you do research on your topic beforehand. You will need a basic understanding of your topic to be able to keep up with and contribute to the discussions and you will use your research during committee work. Often you will find certain material like EU legislation or facts and figures to be useful in your preparations. If you need help with your research you can always contact your chairperson beforehand. We recommend looking into the other topics as well so that you can participate in all the debates. It is possible to use a printer at the session, but it is advisable to print your research at home.

Consent form

Please fill out the right consent form and send it to [email protected] before the 1st of December. If you are an adult (18 years or older) you have to sign yourself. If you are a minor (age under 18), a parent or legal guardian has to sign  for you.

Registration form

It is important that you fill in before the 1st of November to finish your registration. This form contains questions regarding your contact information, emergency contact information, travel information, medical information and your topic preferences.

Welfare

EYP events are meant to be safe and comfortable for everyone, which is why for the entire duration of the session (evenings included), we will follow a zero-tolerance policy towards drugs and alcohol, since most of the participants will be below the legal drinking age in the Netherlands (18). It is also important to stay within the session’s locations, for your own safety and that of the organisation. This means that you are not allowed to leave school grounds at any point in the session. We will also provide nutritious and healthy food for everyone (allergies and dietary needs included), so there will be no need to bring your own food, apart from the Eurovillage dinner, but it is allowed. We do encourage very specific allergies/intolerances such as gluten or lactose to bring special Eurovillage food. You also won’t need to bring money to buy any snacks, but it is allowed of course.

Furthermore, at any point during the session, the EYP will not tolerate any bullying, sexual intimidation or discrimination. There will be two Welfare Officers (“vertrouwenspersoon” in Dutch) present at the event, so if at any point you feel unsafe, uncomfortable or are just in need of a chat, you can talk to them in a private and confidential manner.

By signing up to this event, you have agreed to behave according to these policies. The organising team is responsible for the welfare of the session, so they also reserve the right to send anyone home who displays unacceptable behaviour.

Travel booklet

Dear delegates and officials, welcome to the Regional Selection Conference of EYP the Netherlands. The purpose of this booklet is to provide you with a guide on how to get to Ede! As Organising Team of Zeist 2021, we will provide you with further information about the session, including the programme and a packing list, in the Welcome Booklet. This booklet is specifically meant as a  travel guide to Ede. If you have any questions or difficulties related to your travels or the session in general, please contact the Delegate and Officials Support Organisers ([email protected] or [email protected]).

Travel tip: We would strongly advise our international participants to download the public transportation apps “9292”  and “NS” which can further help you navigate your way to Ede. If you plan on travelling internationally by train, you can download the “NS International” app to help you find the right train.

Sustainbility

As you know, the theme of the session is: “Shifting Lenses: Creating a mosaic of ideas”  honing Europe’s youth to have a better future. Therefore, it is very important for us to create a session that is as sustainable as possible. At the conference, we will do our best to minimise our environmental impact by means of recycling, minimising food waste and paper use, etc.  However, one element of the session that also has a big environmental  impact is the carbon footprint of your travelling to and from the session. So, we highly encourage you to travel sustainably! To break it down, sustainable travel is about being a responsible traveller and making smart choices in every aspect of your trip. To help you in making such choices, we have some travel tips for you.

Arrival

Officials will be expected to arrive Friday the 10th of December at 8:30 AM. Delegates will be expected to arrive Saturday the 11th of December at 08:30 AM.

Departure

The session will be closed on Sunday the 12th of December before 17:00 PM. For officials, we plan on having an officials dinner to have some fun before saying goodbye. If you want to attend this dinner, you might consider delaying your journey home.

Where?

Both officials and delegates will be expected at the venue where we will be staying during the session: Marnix College in Ede – Prins Bernhardlaan 30, 6713MC Ede. You can find directions on how to get there in the section Getting There.

Plane

For our international delegates and officials, we would like to urge you to not take the plane (if at all possible).  It is well known that air travel is by far the most polluting mode of transportation. However, if travelling by plane is your only option, please consider  choosing a more environmentally-friendly airline. For example,  Ryanair is the most polluting airline in Europe, whilst EasyJet is one of the least polluting airlines.

Car/Bus

Going by bus is preferable to going by car, but both are more environmentally friendly than going by plane. For long distances, going by bus is often cheaper than going by plane which makes it an appealing alternative for international participants. If you do decide to go by car, carpooling together will not only minimise your carbon footprint, it usually also results in a fun road trip!

Train

Going by train is the least polluting option for travel by far. Since the Dutch railway system is quite developed and efficient, we would implore you to travel by train when going to Zeist. This is also a viable option for some international delegates and officials, as you can travel from Berlin/Paris/London to Breda by train.

Getting there

Plane

There are multiple airports at which you can arrive. Options include Schiphol Airport (which is the largest in the Netherlands), Eindhoven Airport, Maastricht Airport and Airport Rotterdam/The Hague. From the Schiphol Airport, you will have to take a train to Utrecht Central Station, and then transfer to a train that will take you to Ede-Wageningen, this is usually the NS Intercity to Nijmegen. If you land at Eindhoven Airport (EIN), you will have to take a bus from the airport to Eindhoven Central Station, this is usually line 400 or 401. From there you will have to take a train to Utrecht Central Station where you can transfer to a train that stops at Ede-Wageningen. For Airport Rotterdam/The Hague, the best option is to take the RET Frequentbus 33 to Overschie, get off at Rotterdam Central Station and take the train to Utrecht Central Station there. When flying to Maastricht Airport, the trip is a little longer and more complicated, so it would be best to plan your trip with “9292” or the “NS” app.

Train

Ede is very accessible by train. Your final station will be Ede-Wageningen. (Depending on where you board the train, you might have to transfer at Utrecht Central Station). From Schiphol, there is an Intercity train going directly to Utrecht Central Station. From there, it is an 30-minute train ride to Ede-Wageningen.

Once you get to train station Ede-Wageningen, it’s a 10-minute walk to the host school.

For our international participants, we advise you to book tickets and plan your journey beforehand to avoid any confusion on the website of NS international.

The Power of Compliments

by Sanna Grootenboer (NL)
Under the session theme of ‘Shifting lenses’, the participants of Zeist 2021 were asked to write a compliment or nice message to someone, demonstrating the lens through which we tend to look at others. The reactions of the recipients in this video show how small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
