Academics

Welcome to the Topic Overview Portal!

The Academic Team of Breda 2021 is focusing on accessible information and academic preparation. We wanted the topics as well as the academic overviews to be available and approachable for anyone who was interested.

At Breda 2021, we are discussing topics that are relevant to the larger society. Additionally, we want to move beyond the EYP bubble and make sure anyone who would be interested in these topics could engage with them —as a result, this expanded online format was born.

Our core mission is making our academic preparation easy to both access and understand. With this website format, anyone with a smart device or computer can, with ease, reach the information of all our committees and fully take advantage of it (in their own spurts of motivation whenever they present themselves!)

This accessible format of information comes through the mixed presentation of content. Everyone obtains information and gets inspired differently, and after years of partaking in a more traditional text-based learning in EYP, we feel it is a need for change! The Topic Overviews of Breda 2021 are catering to a broader audience, where it doesn’t matter if you have a lot or no background in the field you’re reading up on: the information is easily accessible and lets you move forward at your own pace. The mix of visuals, timelines, text, sound and video are aimed at keeping attention and to present sometimes difficult concepts in the most optimal way for understanding the greater picture.

The website format also allows us to keep updating the website, keeping the topic overviews up to date with how the world is developing, as well as adding interesting interviews and media projects. So be sure to keep checking out the content, as new information might be added!

The Great Hack: In recent years the potential for social media to be used as an instrument for influencing the manipulation of consequential elections has become abundantly clear. How can the EU ensure the integrity of its own and its Member States’ elections whilst keeping in mind the freedom of political parties to advertise and promote themselves?

Kids of the future: Since 1990, children have become less able to produce unique and unconventional ideas. In a generation where innovation and entrepreneurship are the keys to future development, how should the EU foster innovation in the workforce, while also promoting creativity inside its educational systems?

As the application of Artificial Intelligence becomes increasingly more apparent in everyday life, how can the EU prepare the next generation for a shift in labour requirements and support the current labour market in adapting to changing demands?

Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety

Bearing in mind that an unhealthy diet while young can have long lasting consequences throughout people’s lives, various Member States have introduced measures to address this such as regulations on products as well as education and awareness raising campaigns. With recent talks of increasing the EU’s competences in the field of health, what should be done, to further ensure children’s right to a healthy life?

A free space for all: With social media platforms becoming a breeding ground for the spread of misinformation and conspiracy theories online, influencing the offline, is there a new need for censorship? Should digital discourse remain a place of complete freedom of speech or is there a responsibility to be taken up by tech companies themselves or the EU?

A major concern of machine learning algorithms, is that they might perpetuate bias that was already in the data used to set up the algorithm. As such, to what extent should the EU intervene to ensure the fair and equal treatment of all its citizens, whilst considering the complex nature and ambiguity of many of these algorithms?

Committee on Security and Defence

As warfare moves online, cybersecurity becomes relevant to our defense and security as a continent. With the reliability of cryptography being challenged by the potential invention of the quantum computer, coupled with the increasing threat of hackers, how should the EU proceed to ensure its cyber security?
